On Friday, 5 June 2020, the Ministry, in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority, Office of Diaspora Affairs and the Diaspora African Forum organized a wreath-laying ceremony at the W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture in honor of the 46-year-old African American who was killed by a white cop who knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.
Some Ghanaians, such as artiste manager Bulldog and musician A Plus, damned the government for the act when, according to them, many Ghanaians have fallen through similar instances and nothing had been done in their memory.
Reacting to this on Saturday Night Life on Class91.3FM on Saturday, 6 June 2020, Captain Planet told show hosts Faisal Carter and Charley Lartey that: “It’s not a bad thing, from my perspective”.
He explained: “I think because we all believe that the slave trade started from Ghana, so, mostly, we see Black Americans as Ghanaians; that’s how I get it because slave trade started from Ghana, we see all black people as Ghanaians, so, it’s cool, it’s OK, it wasn’t a big-budget”.
